The Twins are Here!

Wilhelm waits in the comfy chair in the birthing suite. I was induced by having Liam's bag of waters broken. Luckily, I didn't need any pitocin, but I still had to have an IV in case, and because I had to have an epidural, so they had to put in 2 bags of saline solution before that. I was stuck with a needle at least 12 times during the whole day, and I only almost passed out twice, which is huge for me. Contractions started getting regular and strong on their own at 10:30. We spent most of the morning watching Battlestar Galactica on Netflix, while I counted my way through contractions. By 2 pm contractions were so close together and so strong that I said if they didn't do the epidural soon, I wouldn't be able to sit still for it. So they did it soon after that. It was in by 3-ish (I think) and soon after that they decided I was ready to push and I was wheeled into the OR at 3:30/3:45. I pushed and Liam Jay came out pretty fast at 4:03, and Emmet Martin was pulled out feet first right after at 4:08. The nursing, doctor and the whole staff at St. Mary's were all wonderful. Liam weighed 5 lbs 3.2 oz, 18 inches long and Emmet weighed 5 lbs 4.5 oz, 18.5 inches long. The Placenta looks like they are Di-Di, not Mono-Di like the doctor predicted from early ultrasounds. So they may be fraternal and not identical. I'm still waiting to hear what they say about the pathology reports. We may never know, or maybe we'll do a genetic test to confirm. Right now, it is hard to tell how much they look alike, since Emmet has a mask on.

Baby Liam after they finally got him and me cleaned up and could let me hold him.

We couldn't visit Emmet in the NICU until evening. So his grandma and big brother Tristan got to meet him at the same time. Every time I've gone to see him, I end up in tears, because I hate seeing him alone in a box with all those tubes and wires. I wanted to hold him so badly and finally got to this afternoon on 4/12 after they decided it was ok to take out the arterial line they had in his umbilical cord. He still had to keep the C-Pap machine on, though, so I still don't really know what his nose looks like... The poor little guy is breathing very rapidly, but he's getting enough oxygen without supplementing it, so he just needs to develop his lungs a bit more.

Tristan got to be the first to meet his little brother Liam.
